Here is a photo of Margarita Borromeo Lagandaon which was taken in 2008. She is the mother of Nilda Borromeo Servando (who kindly shared this photo with us), a member of the Borromeo clan from the Island of Negros. Negros is across the channel from the Island of Cebu. Nilda and the members of her generation are my fifth degree cousins, we having a common ancestor born in 1770 (Carlos Borromeo III, who was born on the Island of Panay).

Seen second from the left in the back row is my uncle Andres Buenaventura Rallos Borromeo (1904-1948). Fourth from the left is my uncle Tomas Cabrera Borromeo (the late father of Lito). Second from the left in next row down is his wife, my late aunt Carmen Barredo Borromeo. In the center of the same row is my maternal grandmother Anunciacion "Anon" Rallos de Borromeo (1885-1938), with her daughters (my aunts) the nuns Sister Rosario Rallos Borromeo (1905-1988) and Sister Luz Caricia Rallos Borromeo (1908-1983) on either side of her. ANNUALLY, the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC) extends awards for excellence in each profession that is under its commission. This year, the distinction went to a very accomplished Cebuana, landscape architect, Socorro Borromeo Atega, who was recommended by the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects (Pala). For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter Atega was awarded the prestigious title, Outstanding Landscape Architect for 2009, at the Manila Hotel last month with her family in proud attendance! After all, not just any architect, a lady at that, could achieve such national prominence! Baging, as we fondly call her, has these enviable facts in her professional file: Practice in government service with National Power Corp. after the graduate program; section chief of physical planning (1983-1987); and manager, Land Management Division (1987-1989). At present, she has her private practice as landscape architect and consultant for various resorts, subdivisions, parks, and eco-tourism development. On her academic background, she is a senior lecturer in University of the Philippines-Cebu (1984-1987), professor in University of San Carlos, College of Architecture and Fine Arts (USC-Cafa), and program coordinator of landscape architecture (1992 to present). Landscape architecture is a profession that applies both art and science in the design and planning of land areas to create an environment in harmony with nature, beautiful and functional outdoor spaces where people live, work and play. To achieve this and more Baging has this academic excellence tucked under her belt: A graduate of Masters in Landscape Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Mass., USA. Locally, she is totally immersed in social development and environmental sustainability as volunteer executive director and past president of Cebu Uniting for Sustainable Water Foundation Inc. It is with undeniable pride, therefore, that Cebu congratulates Socorro Atega for this award.

This "Gold Crepe Dress" designed by my mother Hermenegilda Borromeo Nonnenkamp was worn by a professional model at "Fashion in Perspective" presented by the students of the Traphagen School of Fashion (now Parson's School of Design) on May 18, 1961 at Riviera Terrace in New York City.

Here is yet another of my mother's (Hermenegilda "Gilda" Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp's) fashion designs completed prior to her marriage to my father.  She graduated from the Traphagen School of Fashion (now part of Parson's College) in New York City in 1961.

Here is one of my mother's (Hermenegilda Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp's) designs from her time in fashion design in New York City.  The description reads as follows: Fabric (silk urganza - lined), Color (White with Red-Black-White feathers), Detail (back opening - feathers, may be embroidered).

One of my mother's (Hermenegilda Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp's) designs was featured in the Fall-Winter 1961-1962 issue of "Fashion Digest" and can be seen in the center above.  The caption reads "Pineapple cloth delicately beaded, over red silk peau sheath, honorable mention gown, created by Gilda Borromeo and modeled by Marcia Chambers."

Here is a nice old black and white photograph of a Borromeo "Tartanilla" horse-drawn cart.  The history of pre-motorized transportation in the Philippines started in 1870 and continued until about 1960.  Horse drawn carts were known by different names, which denoted their specific style and design.  "Companieas de los Tranyias de Filipinas" (which existed from 1885 to 1898) was a nationwide Filipino industrial organization dedicated to the manufacture of horse drawn carriages. The Borromeo Family Partnership produced the "Tartanilla" version of these vehicles (distinguished by rear passenger entry) from 1879 until February 1933. "Tartanillas" were sold and still exist in Cebu, Negros, Samar, Leyte and Northern Mindanao. The slightly different "Karatela" of Luzon (Manila) and "Calesa" of Panay (Iloilo) are distinguished by front passenger entry. 121,631 such vehicles were produced from about 1870 until the early 1960s, 19,724 of these being Borromeo "Tartanillas."

Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo in Carmel by the Sea, California.  This "Our Lady of Bethlehem" Carmel Mission is the oldest Shrine of Our Lady on the West Coast of America.  The famous Church dates back to June 3, 1770, when it was founded by Father Junipero Serra.

One of the four Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy. The Italian Borromeos of Milano, Italy are members of the lesser nobility, with the eldest male heir of their family line being a Count of Arona. They are descended from the Vitaliani family of Padua, Italy - which can trace its ancestry even further back (around the time of Christ).

Architect's drawing of the future Borromeo-Atega family home at the Judge Andrés Borromeo Compound on Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City in 1950 (the property on which the home now stands has been in the Borromeo family since 1903).  My uncle Lieutenant Colonel Leonil Torralba Atega (1918-1995) served in the US Army during World War 2, and lived through the infamous Bataan "Death March" in 1942.

Here is a photo of the late Judge Crispin Borromeo y Pulaire (1891-1972) and his wife Petra Ozaraga de Borromeo (1900-1994).  They are the parents of José Ozaraga Borromeo (born 1938), who is in turn the father of my third degree cousin Marjoe Anthony Quijano Borromeo, now of Houston, Texas (USA).  My Tito José is thus a second degree cousin to my mother Hermenegilda Borromeo Nonnenkamp, and the late Judge Crispin Borromeo was thus a first degree cousin to my late grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923).

Here is a Christmas 2007 photo of the Borromeo family of Pittsburg, California (different spelling from the famous and much larger city in Pennsylvania!).  Here are Norma Abad Borromeo and her two children, including son Lance Abad Borromeo.  Lance is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and of the recent wars in both Mindanao, the Philippines and Iraq (both part of the so-called U.S. "War on Terror").  They belong to the extended clan of Marcial Borromeo y Guerrero, a first degree cousin of my late grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923).  Norma's ex-husband Reneirio "René" de Jesus Borromeo is my third degree cousin.  Lance works as an automobile mechanic.

Here is the family of my first degree cousin Andrés "Andy" Filomeno Borromeo Querouz in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates.  Andy has worked for the Sharjah Airport Authority as a Ground Services Instructor since 1984.  Seen from left to right are Andy's elder daughter Roxanne "Roxy" Baldoza Querouz, Andy's wife Susan Baldoza Querouz, Andy's youngest son Francis Baldoza Querouz, Andy and Andy's younger daughter Maria "Mayet" Baldoza Querouz.  Andy's eldest child Andrew Baldoza Querouz is now in Metro Manila with his wife and family.  Roxy works as an Administrative Assistant for a Dutch firm in Sharjah.

This sign is displayed at Borromeo Plaza in downtown Cebu City, the Philippines.  It shows my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923), who served as the Judge of the Court of First Instance for the Provinces of Surigao and Agusan on Mindanao from July 1914 until his tragic assassination in January of 1923.  His historical position is the equivalent of a modern Provincial or State Supreme Court Chief Justice.  He won enduring fame as the popular "Fighting Judge" of Surigao City due to his Philippine Supreme Court victory in the landmark case of "Borromeo vs. Mariano" in January of 1921 (2 years before he was assassinated).  This case preserved the independence of the Judicial Branch of Government in the face of a hostile Insular Legislature lead by future Philippine President Manuel Luis Quezon.

Here is yet another view of the monument in honor of my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923), seen at Borromeo Plaza in downtown Cebu City, the Philippines.  The design was done by my first cousin Socorro "Baging" Borromeo Atega (born 1951), who is the sole independent Philippine landscape architect outside of Metro Manila.  Borromeo Plaza is a three-phase commercial office complex owned and managed by the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. (incorporated in February of 1933).  The Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. was established out of the estate of my late great-grandparents José Maria Borromeo y Galan (1847-1930) and Margarita Sy Reynes de Borromeo (1853-1931), as well as the numerous holdings of the late physician Dr. Maximo Borromeo y Reynes (1887-1948).  "Lolo Max" was a famous "society doctor" in old Cebu.

I took these two photographs on "A. Borromeo Street" in downtown Cebu City, the Philippines in July 1985.  The upper photo shows the store front of the "Island Photo Center" at 34 A. Borromeo Street, while the lower photograph shows a street scene taken from a different location on the same street.  "A. Borromeo Street" is of course named after my famous maternal grandfather, Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923).  "Lolo Ating" was a defender of the Philippine Constitution, and a true Martyr for Justice.  His famous and landmark Supreme Court Case of "Borromeo vs. Mariano" (won in January 1921) successfully defended the concept of an independent judicial branch of government.  He was assassinated shortly before being appointed to the Supreme Court of the Philippine Islands.  His defense of the independent judiciary came about when he refused to be bribed by corrupt politicians of the "Partido Nacionalista," or Nationalist Party.  The corrupt Nationalists remained in political power due to electoral fraud, and he gave his life in fighting against their evil injustice.

I took this photo in July 1985, at the Judge Andrés Borromeo Compound on Osmeña Boulevard (formerly Jones Avenue) in Cebu City.  On the left at her front door step is my late aunt, my mother's next-elder sister, Maria Benita ("Tita Biyay") Borromeo Atega (1919-2006).  Next to her is my first cousin Achilles "Boy Ike" Borromeo Querouz (born 1945).  Ike is a retired officer of the Philippine Constabulary, and the second eldest child of my late aunt, another older sister of my mother, Fé Antonieta Margarita ("Tita Nining") Borromeo Querouz (1912-2006).  Ike is also more recently retired from a former subsidiary of the Borromeo Business Group, or Honda Cars Cebu.  He is married to Paulita Bonghanoy Querouz, and they in turn have three grown children.  Ike's eldest son, Achilles "Bambi" Bonghanoy Querouz is married, has a family, and works in Cebu for a subsidiary of Dornier, the famous German aircraft manufacturer.  Ike's 2nd son, Achilles "Aichel" Bonghanoy Querouz is married to Charmaine Esperito Querouz and resides in Canberra, Australia, where he works for Accenture - the former IT subsidiary of Arthur Andersen.  Ike's daughter, Faye Pauleen Bonghanoy Querouz, resides in Cebu and manages a store for McDonald's Restaurant - yet another former subsidiary of the Borromeo Business Group.

This photo was taken in Manila on December 16, 1966.  On the left is my mother's second cousin Tomas Luis Cabrera Borromeo (1910-1991)and next to my Tito Tomas is his wife Carmen Fargas Barredo Borromeo (my Tita Carmen).  Tito Tomas was a lawyer by trade, and he was also the best friend of my late uncle Andrés "Diding" Rallos Borromeo (1904-1948).  Tita Carmen (1912-1997) came from one of the most prominent Spanish ("Creole Español") families in the Philippines.  Tito Tomas and Tita Carmen had ten children (my third cousins), nine of whom are still living.  My mother lived with this warm and wonderful family at their home in Mandaluyong (metropolitan Manila) from 1955 until 1957, when she emigrated to the USA.

This photo was taken near Carmel, California in October 1972.  From the left are seen my father Wilfried Erich Nonnenkamp, my mother Hermenegilda "Gilda" Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp and my mother's second cousin Angelita "Inday" Cabrera Borromeo.  My "Tita Day" is now the Matriarch of the extended Borromeo family of the Philippines.  She and my mother may also be seen in the photos unveiling the monument to my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (photos which were taken in 1927, or a good 45 years prior to the photo above).

Here is a photo of my mother Hermenegilda "Gilda" Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp prior to her marriage to my father, when she was living with the Cruz family in San Francisco, California from 1957 to 1959.  She is seen standing in the back row, second from the left.  The Cruz family was headed by the late Antonio ("Tatay Cruz") Remehio Cruz, Sr., who served in the American Navy during World War Two and who emigrated to the USA with his wife Maura ("Nanay Cruz") immediately after the war.  Tatay and Nanay Cruz had ten children, most of whom now reside in and around Fremont, California.  My parents and I visited this warm and wonderful family often when we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1967 until 1987.  The Cruz family came from Pampanga in Luzon and emigrated to Northern California.  While living with them from 1957-1959, my mother worked at Del Monte in San Francisco.

Here is a photo of the three children of my third cousin Celeste "Gemma" de Jesus Borromeo Olavides.  On the left is her eldest son Lee Martin Borromeo Olavides, who now works as a Store Manager for Sprint-Nextel Communications in metropolitan Los Angeles, Southern California.  Next to Lee Martin is his sister Kara "Kay" Angela Borromeo Olavides Gustetich, who works as a Registered Nurse near Martinez, California.  On the right is their brother Michael "Mike" Celestine Borromeo Olavides, who works as an Occupational Therapist in Wales, the United Kingdom.  My parents and I visited their wonderful family often when we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area (from 1967 to 1987).

This photo of the family of my eldest first cousin Edmond Morrow Paterno Borromeo (sitting in the far back) was taken at Ed's home in Panorama City, California on December 25, 1993.  Ed is the only child of my uncle Andrés Buenaventura "Diding" Rallos Borromeo (1904-1948).  Ed was born in Manila in 1942 and was killed in a tragic automobile accident in California in 1995.  Ed's five children seen from the right are Charles Edmond Gonzaga Borromeo, Edmond Gerard ("Gerry") Paras Borromeo, Clint Edward Gonzaga Borromeo, Diona Gonzaga Borromeo and Eileen Marie Paras Borromeo.  Gerry is now married to Josephine Nucom To Borromeo, and they have one daughter.  Clint is married and has one daughter, residing near Phoenix, Arizona.  Diona is married and has one son; she works for American Express Tax & Business Services (my former employer while I lived in New York City) in Los Angeles.  Eileen is now married with two children, living in Sacramento, California.  She works as a Registered Nurse and her husband (not the ex-boyfriend in the photo!) is a Medical Doctor.

This wedding photo was taken on October 12, 1991.  The third person standing from the right is my third cousin Celeste "Gemma" de Jesus Borromeo Olavides.  Her husband Eliseo "Lee" Olavides is standing on the far left.  Lee worked for Shell Oil in Martinez, California prior to his retirement.  Their eldest son Lee Martin Borromeo Olavides is the groom standing next to my cousin Gemma.  Lee Martin's bride is Michelle Kint Olavides, whose father comes from Flemish Belgium and whose mother comes from Germany.  Lee Martin and Michelle now reside in Southern California and have three sons.  Lee Martin's brother Michael "Mike" Celestine Borromeo Olavides is standing on the far right.  Mike is now married to Sarah Jane Vanderslice, who comes from San Diego.  Mike and Sarah have one daughter and reside in Wales (the United Kingdom) where Mike works as an Occupational Therapist.  Next to Mike is his sister Kara Angela Borromeo Olavides Gustetich.  Kara is divorced and has one daughter.  She works as a Registered Nurse in Northern California.

This photo of my first cousin Andrés "Andy" Filomeno Borromeo Querouz and his bride Susan Baldoza Querouz was taken on the date of their wedding on November 4, 1971.  At the time, Andy and Susan were employed with the Philippine Constitutional Convention. Andy began working for Philippine Airlines (PAL) in April 1973 and joined the Sharjah Airport Authority in the United Arab Emirates in October 1984. Andy, Susan and three of their four children still reside in Sharjah.

This photo of the Querouz family was taken on June 9, 1972.  On the left (# 1) is my aunt Fé Antonieta "Nining" Rallos Borromeo Querouz.  Number (2) is Tita Nining's daughter in law Paulita Bonghanoy Querouz.  Number (3) is my first cousin (and Paulita's husband) Achilles Andrés Abdon "Boy Ike" Borromeo Querouz.  At the time, Achilles was a commissioned officer in the Philippine Constabulary.  The small boy held by the family maid (y) is the eldest child of Achilles and Paulita, or their son Achilles Andrew Angelo "Bambi" Bonghanoy Querouz.  The other boy (x) is Tita Nining's ward.

This photo of my first cousin Fé Angelique ("Baby") Borromeo Querouz was taken on the date of her graduation from the University of San Carlos ("Saint Charles" in English) Borromeo in Cebu City on April 6, 1968.  The photo was sent to my aunt Rosario Rallos Borromeo ("Sister Marie Andrés").

This photo of the Atega family was taken in Butuan City, Mindanao on January 29, 1958.  In the back from the left can be seen my aunt Maria Benita "Biyay" Rallos Borromeo Atega and my uncle Lieutenant Colonel Leonil "Dodong" Torralba Atega.  In the front are their children and my first cousins Vicente Francisco José "Loloi" Borromeo Atega, Socorro "Baging" Borromeo Atega and Anunciacion "Anon" Borromeo Atega.  Tito Dodong's family comes from Butuan City, which is located on the Northern coast of Mindanao.  The dialect spoken in Northern Mindanao is Cebuano, just like on the island Province of Cebu itself.

This photo in front of a traditional Philippine "Jeepney" (common public transportation in the Philippines since the end of World War Two) was taken upon the occasion of the end of the school year on March 27, 1960.  The girl holding the cake is my first cousin Anunciacion "Anon" Borromeo Atega.  Next to Anon is her mother and my aunt Maria Benita "Biyay" Rallos Borromeo Atega, and next to my "Tita Biyay" is my first cousin Socorro "Baging" Borromeo Atega.  The small boy in the front is my first cousin Vicente Francisco José "Loloi" Borromeo Atega.

This photo of my first cousin Anunciacion "Anon" Borromeo Atega was taken upon the occasion of her Junior Prom in Cebu City on February 8, 1963.  Anon graduated with the High School Class of 1964.

This photograph was taken in Cebu City on November 7, 1952.  The bigger girl in the back is my first cousin Marylynn "Mars" Borromeo Querouz.  The small girl she is holding is my first cousin Socorro "Baging" Borromeo Atega, now a successful landscape architect (and Harvard graduate) in Cebu City.  Mars is a successful Occupational Therapist who works at the Makati Medical Center.  The small boy in the middle is my first cousin Andrés "Andy" Filomeno Borromeo Querouz, who is now a Ground Services Instructor at the International Airport in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates.  The girl on the right hand side of the photo is my first cousin Anunciacion "Anon" Borromeo Atega, who now teaches at a Roman Catholic School in East Orange, New Jersey.

This article about my mother titled "Fate Gave Gilda Two Birthplaces" appeared in the April 8, 1955 editions of "The Washington Post" and "Times Herald."  She lived in Washington, D.C. from 1953 to 1955.  Mistakes in the article: my mother was born in Surigao City on Mindanao, and not in Cebu City.  Also, her serious spinal injury was a direct result of a bicycle accident she suffered while fleeing a Japanese soldier during World War Two.  {When in a whimsical mood, Gilda Borromeo can claim to have been born in both the Philippine Islands and the United States.  Dark-haired Gilda is in Washington as secretarial assistant to the Manila Chronicle's chief correspondent here.  It is a joke with her that although she herself was born on the island of Cebu, "part" of her is American.  Gilda first came to this country right after World War II.  She was in hospitals in Boston and California for three years - one year spent in a cast.  Part of her spine is American - a transplant from a United States bonebank.  "It was bad food during the war and the constant running to keep out of the way of the Japanese invaders," she says.  "I had a serious infection."  Technically, Gilda is not a newspaper woman.  But helping a busy boss who has to be out of the office much of the time gives her more than a taste of journalism.  Her duties have never been restricted to the routine of dictation and phone-answering.    She has aspirations in several other directions and, if her work visa permitted, she might now be making a career for herself in art, commercial illustrating, interior decorating or flower design.}

My mother Hermenegilda Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp lived with the Borromeo family of Mandaluyong (in metropolitan Manila) from 1955 until 1957, when my mother emigrated to the United States.  This photo was taken during the time she lived with them.  My mother is the third person from the left in the back row.  Tita Carmen Fargas Barredo Borromeo can be seen immediately to the right of my mother, with my aunt Sister Marie Andrés (Rosario Rallos Borromeo) seen to the right of Tita Carmen.  The nun on the extreme left hand side of the photo is of course my aunt Sister Marie Anunciacion (Luz Caricia Rallos Borromeo).  Tita Carmen was married to my uncle Tito Tomas Luis Cabrera Borromeo, a second cousin of my mother.  Tito Tomas and Tita Carmen had ten children, nine of whom are still living.  I am guessing that the car on the left hand side of the photo is a Buick, judging by its massive front.

Lance Garrett Borromeo (the son of my third cousin Reneirio de Jesus Borromeo and Norma Abad) served in the United States Navy as a "Seabee" (as an IT & Webmaster for a US Naval Mobile Construction Battalion) and fought for the liberation of Iraq in 2003 and in the Southern Philippines (Basilan Island) in 2002 in the US War against terror (Operation "Enduring Freedom").  The photos above were taken in Iraq.  The top photo shows Lance at one of the former Dictator Saddam Hussein's many lavish "palaces" in the ancient city of Babylon and the bottom photo shows Lance on the road to the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad.  Those serving in Iraq had to endure Summertime high temperatures as high as 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

My aunt "Tita Biyay" Maria Benita Rallos Borromeo Atega (1919-2006) and my uncle "Tito Dodong" Lieutenant Colonel Leonil Torralba Atega (1918-1995) upon the happy occasion of their wedding in 1946. Tito Dodong joined the American military in the Philippines before World War Two, and was one of many Philippine and American veterans of the infamous Bataan "Death March" in 1942. He told me about an incident whereby a Japanese guard broke his ribs with the butt of a rifle, for the mere act of assisting an exhausted comrade who fell down during the march. Tito Dodong escaped from Japanese captivity in 1943 and fought against the Japanese occupation troops alongside other Philippine and American soldiers who either refused to surrender or succeeded in escaping from the Japanese. He was then blackmailed into surrendering once again in 1944, as the Japanese held his own brother as "bait."  Tito Dodong was born in Butuan City, Agusan Province (Mindanao Island).  The Atega family is descended from a Spanish Friar.

One of the last photographs taken of my aunt "Tita Nining" Fé Antonieta Margarita Rallos Borromeo Querouz (1912-2006).  She lived in San Pedro City, Laguna Province (Island of Luzon) with her daughters and my first cousins Marylynn "Mars" Borromeo Querouz and Fé Angelique "Baby" Borromeo Querouz.  Tita Nining served on the Board of Directors of the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. (holding company of the Borromeo business group of the Philippines) from 1948 until 1965.  She and her late husband my uncle Agripino Galo Querouz had six children, four of whom are still living.  Their son Achilles "Ike" Borromeo Querouz resides with his family in Cebu, and their son Andrés "Andy" Filomeno Borromeo Querouz resides with his family in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates.

My mother Hermenegilda "Gilda" Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp at her real estate office in Danville, California.  My mother held a real estate license in California from 1978 until my parents moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1987.  My father Wilfried Erich Nonnenkamp was a Vice President with the Bank of America in Virginia and Georgia until his retirement in 1994.  He managed the Letter of Credit Department within the International Banking Division.

In Manhattan in 1957, where my mother completed her undergraduate studies in Fashion Design between 1957-1959.  From the right in the back row are my third cousin Maria Pilar Barredo Borromeo Garmsen, my mother's second cousin Caridad "Caring" Borromeo Uy Herrera Suchman and my mother Hermenegilda Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp.  Seated on the floor from the right are Tita Caring's elder brother Dr. Rodolfo "Rudy" Borromeo Uy Herrera (the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Borromeo Business Group today), my third cousin Maria Rosa "Rosie" Redenta Barredo Borromeo Rieth and my mother's second cousin Dr. Jesus "Jess" Rallos Camara.

Here is my third cousin Reneirio "René" de Jesus Borromeo, his ex-wife Norma Abad and their children.  René's paternal grandfather Marcial Borromeo y Guerrero was a first cousin & best friend to my maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes.  The two enjoyed horseback riding (my grandfather's horse was named "Quaranto" after one of his legal cases).  Lolo Marcial completed the old genealogy of the Borromeo family which was lost during World War 2 in the Philippines (1941-1945) along with so much else the family owned.  Lance Garrett Borromeo served in the US Navy as a "Seabee" (as an IT & Webmaster for a US Naval Mobile Construction Battalion) and fought in the liberation of Iraq in 2003 and in the Southern Philippines (Basilan Island) in 2002 in the US War against terror (Operation "Enduring Freedom").

(Marc Evan Borromeo Nonnenkamp) am seen wearing a traditional Philippine "Barong Tagalog" in the year 2000, with my mother Hermenegilda Amor Victoria Rallos Borromeo Nonnenkamp on the right.  The "Barong" and something similar to it is seen throughout much of the Spanish and former Spanish colonial world as formal dress for men and boys.  When conducting business in such countries, men will often wear this instead of a Western suit & tie.

In Manhattan in 1989.  On the left is my second cousin Deborah "Debbie" Borromeo Uy Herrera Suchman (now married to George Zeolla), myself (Marc Evan Borromeo Nonnenkamp) and on the right is her elder sister Rachel Borromeo Uy Herrera Suchman (since married to Ernest Csak).  I was in New York City for interviews after graduating with an MBA from the Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, but wound up working for the RTC (now part of the FDIC) in Atlanta instead.  Debbie eventually became a CPA and worked for Ernst & Young.  Since then, she got married to George, changed to a career in photography and had two children.  Rachel got married and now has three children.

Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) sent this portrait of himself to his daughter and my aunt, the future "Sister Marie Anunciacion" Luz "Luching" Caricia Rallos Borromeo (1908-1983) on August 2, 1922.  The caption is in Spanish, the language used by the educated classes in the Philippines between the 16th century and the first half of the 20th century.  "A mi querida hija Luz Caricia, en prueba de afeccio - 'El Original,' 2. Agosto 1922."  The English translation reads "To my darling daughter Luz Caricia, in proof of my affection - 'The Original,' Manila, August 2, 1922."

My uncle Andrés Buenaventura "Diding" Rallos Borromeo, Jr. (1904-1948) was General Manager of Rockgas Inter-Island Gas Service, Inc. from 1946 until his death in 1948.  Rockgas was the first natural gas company in the Philippines, headquartered in Manila.  In front of Tito Diding is my eldest first cousin Edmond Morrow Borromeo (1942-1995), the sole child of Tito Diding.  Edmond is survived by his wife Evelyn Gonzaga Borromeo Cruz and by his five children, all of whom now reside in California.  Evelyn Gonzaga Borromeo-Cruz and her new husband Kevin Cruz reside in Southern California, along with Edmond's eldest son Edmond Gerard "Gerry" Paras Borromeo & his wife Josephine "Jo" Nucom To Borromeo, Evelyn's daughter Dionna Gonzaga Borromeo & her husband and Edmond's & Evelyn's son Charles Gonzaga Borromeo.  Edmond's daughter Eileen Paras Borromeo resides with her husband in Northern California, while Edmond's & Evelyn's youngest son Clint & his wife reside in Arizona.

My uncle Andrés Buenaventura "Diding" Rallos Borromeo, Jr. (1904-1948) in the U.S. military uniform of the R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officer Training Corps) in 1920.  Tito Diding graduated from Cebu High School in 1921, and went on to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) as a Philippine government "Pensionado" in 1924, whence he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1928.  Thereafter, he served upon the Philippine Board of Examiners for Mechanical Engineering until 1938.  From 1938-1946, my Tito Diding served on the Board of Directors of the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. (BBEI).  The BBEI was incorporated on February 8, 1933, and is the parent company to the modern Borromeo Group of Companies (www.borromeo.ph/).

Estate, Inc., the holding company of the modern Borromeo Group of Companies in Cebu City, from 1933-1946.  From 1946 until his early demise in 1948, he served as General Manager of Rockgas Inter-Island Gas Service, Inc., the first natural gas company in the Philippines.  He had one son, being my late first degree cousin Edmond Morrow Paterno Borromeo (1942-1995).

My uncle Andrés Buenaventura "Diding" Rallos Borromeo, Jr. (1904-1948) was the eldest child and eldest son of my maternal grandparents Judge Andrés "Ating" Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) and Anunciacion "Anon" Bonjoc Rallos de Borromeo (1885-1938).  His twin brother Buenaventura Rallos Borromeo (1904) died in infancy.  Tito Diding earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston (Class of 1928).  Upon returning to the Philippines, he served as Chairman of the Board of Mechanical Engineering from 1928 until 1938.  He then served on the Board of Directors of the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. from 1938 to 1946.  His final position was as General Manager of Rockgas Inter-Island Gas Service, Inc. fom 1946 until his death in 1948.  Tito Diding started Rockgas Inter-Island Gas Service along with my great-uncle Canuto Octavio Borromeo y Reynes (1891-1959).  Lolo Canuto managed Rockgas from 1948 to 1959 and Lolo Canuto's son Federico "Nene" Noel Borromeo managed the company from 1959 until it was sold to the National Power Corporation in 1980.

On the left is Matt's father Vicente Sabarre Tan and on the right is author Marc Evan Borromeo Nonnenkamp at my parents' home in Blackhawk Country Club (Danville, California) in 1983.  That's a black bottom swimming pool (for the "lake effect") and the photo was taken before we took a day trip into San Francisco.  Wish we still had that much hair!

Standing in the back is the author Marc Evan Borromeo Nonnenkamp and in the front is my third cousin once removed (nephew) Lee Martin Borromeo Olavides, in a photo taken at my parents' home at "The Lake" in Newark, California in 1973.  At the time, I was 11 years old and Lee Martin was 7.  Lee Martin and wife Michele Kint Olavides now reside in Chino Hills, California and have three sons.

My first cousin Vicente "Loloi" Francisco José Borromeo Atega enjoying his favorite sport of golf at Cebu Country Club.  He has worked for Philippine Airlines since 1975 and is now their Cargo Manager.  He and wife Angelie Alice Rivera Ynclino Atega reside at the Judge Andrés Borromeo Compound in Cebu, a family property since 1903.

My second cousin Maximo "Maxcy" Francisco José La'O Borromeo has been the General Manager and Senior Executive of the Borromeo Business Group of the Philippines since 1987 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. since 1985.  He is also on the Board of Directors of other Borromeo Group companies including Tolar Development Corporation, Margarita Agro-Industrial Corporation, McBros Development Corporation, Visayas Auto Ventures, Honda Motorworld, HMW Lending Investors, HMW Western Visayas, Dearborn Motors, Inc., Dearborn Motors Cebu, Performance Auto Management Group, Inc. (BMW Cebu), Isuzu Visayas, the Vito Borromeo Estate, Inc. and the Salud Borromeo Memorial Charity Foundation.  Maxcy is also President of Aston-Gestus Cebu Maxi Management Corporation (Caltex Gorordo Avenue Cebu).  He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Ateneo de Manila and an M.B.A. from LaSalle College in Bacolod.  Prior to working for the Borromeo Group, Maxcy worked for Proctor & Gamble and then for Mobil Oil.  He and his wife Maria Victoria ("Marivic") Rodriguez Borromeo have five sons and five grandchildren.

My late uncle Jesus Edmundo "Eddie" Rallos Borromeo, who lived from 1917 until 1919.  He was the third son and sixth child of Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) and Anunciacion Bonjoc Rallos de Borromeo (1885-1938).

Estate, Inc.  The photo in the top left and the three photos in the top right show different views of the Borromeo Office Complex located on Andrés Borromeo Street in downtown Cebu.  The second photo down on the left shows the corporate headquarters of the Borromeo Business Group of the Philippines - "Centro Maximo" which is named after my great uncle Dr. Maximo Borromeo y Reynes, and which sits on the former residential estate of my great-grandparents Don José Maria Borormeo y Galan (1847-1930) and Doña Margarita Sy Reynes de Borormeo (1853-1931).  Their home was totally destroyed during the Second World War in the Philippines (1941-1945).  The photo in the lower left shows our rest house in Talisay, Cebu Province.

My second cousin Gerardo "Dito" Vasquez Borromeo and his family in 1995.  Dito's wife Ines Prieto Borromeo comes from an old Spanish family in the Philippines.  Their four children from left to right are Carlos Prieto Borromeo, Sophia Prieto Borromeo, Andrés Prieto Borromeo and baby Ines.  Dito is a graduate of the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T. M.B.A., class of of 1983) and a former classmate of Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman and CEO of the Ayala Business Group.  Dito is President of Borromeo Technology Holdings, Inc. and Smartpark, Inc. (both of which he owns) and he is also Vice Chairman of Philippine Transcarriers, Inc. (a placement firm for higher level shipboard personnel).

Here is "Lola Anon" (Anunciacion Bonjoc Rallos de Borromeo; 1885-1938) on her way to Mass on October 25, 1915.  The photo was taken by "Daddy" (her husband Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes; 1880-1923) in front of their Borromeo-built horse-drawn "Tartanilla" cart.  The driver and two of their three daughters are looking back for the camera.

The Borromeo family home in Surigao City from 1914 until 1923, where my maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) served as Judge of the Court of First Instance (State Supreme Court Justice) for Surigao and Agusan Provinces.  The horse is pulling a Borromeo-built "Tartanilla" cart.

José Maria Borromeo y Galan was born on April 12, 1847 and died on March 16, 1930.  My great-grandfather was the second child and eldest son of Don Maximo Borromeo y Feliz and Doña Hermenegilda Galan de Borromeo.  "Tatay Pepe" was a pioneer in the Philippine vehicle industry.  His family partnership manufactured almost 20,000 horse-drawn "Tartanilla" carts from 1879 until 1933.  On February 8, 1933, the estate of my late great-grandparents incorporated to form the modern holding company of the Borromeo Business Group of the Philippines - the "Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc."  The corporate headquarters building is located upon the former residential property of my great-grandparents, which was destroyed during the Second World War.

Margarita Sy Reynes de Borromeo was born on July 20, 1853 and died on October 13, 1931.  "Nanay Titay" had a salt trading business located at the Cebu City Wharf.  The current agribusiness subsidiary of the Borromeo Business Group is named after my great-grandmother.  This is "Margarita Agro-Industrial Corporation" with corporate farming properties in Cebu Province, Northern Mindanao and Leyte Province (the large San Isidro Farm).

The future "Sister Marie Andrés" and Mother Superior of the Roman Catholic Augustinian-Order ICM Congregation.  Rosario "Charing" Rallos Borromeo was born on November 5, 1905 and died on October 17, 1988.  She was the third child and the eldest daughter of Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) and Anunciacion Bonjoc Rallos de Borromeo (1885-1938).  This photo was taken in 1930, before she commenced her religious studies in Belgium in 1931.  My Tita Charing was a goddaughter of future Philippine President Sergio Osmeña, Sr.  Don Sergio Osmeña, Sr. was the first Vice President of the US Commonwealth of the Philippine Islands from 1935 to 1941 and the first President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1945 to 1946.

The future "Sister Marie Anunciacion."  Luz "Luching" Caricia Rallos Borromeo was born on May 6, 1908 in Bohol and died on October 19, 1983.  She was the fourth child and second daughter of Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) and Anunciacion Bonjoc Rallos de Borromeo (1885-1938).  She was born in the Province of Bohol, because Judge Borromeo served as Chief Prosecutor there from 1908 until his promotion to Surigao City in 1914.  This photo was taken in 1930.  She completed her religious studies in Belgium from 1935 to 1938, after she had completed studies in Dentistry in the Philippines.  College and medical school took from 1925 (High School graduation) until 1933.

Anunciacion "Anon" Bonjoc Rallos de Borromeo (1885-1938) seated on the right.  Angelita "Inday" Cabrera Borromeo (born 1911) standing on the left.  "Inday" or "Tita Day" is a second cousin to the eight children of Lola Anon.

This is one view of Borromeo Plaza in downtown Cebu City, the Philippines.  It is located on Andrés Borromeo Street, named in honor of my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923).  Borromeo Plaza is a three-phase commercial development owned and managed by the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc.  It houses 21 stores offering various services and products such as a fitness center, a vehicle parts store, a cellular phone shop, clothing stores and small restaurants.  "Union Bank" is a commercial bank owned by the Aboitiz Group, one of Cebu's largest family-owned trading houses (i.e., business groups).  Metro Cebu is the second largest metropolitan area in the Philippines after Metro Manila, with more than 3,8 million inhabitants in 2008.

Here is a photo of my uncle (my mother's first degree cousin) Dr. Rodolfo "Rudy" Borromeo Uy Herrera.  Tito Rudy is the second to youngest child of Patrocinio Borromeo de Uy Herrera, having been born in 1928.  He practices medicine at the Makati Medical Center, and resides in Ayala Alabang (Metro Manila).  Since 1992, he has been President and Chief Operating Officer of the Borromeo Bros. Estate, Inc. and of the Salud Borromeo Foundation.  This photo was taken on the occasion of the official unveiling of the bust in honor of my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) at the Borromeo Plaza in downtown Cebu City on May 24, 2008.

Here is yet another photo taken during the late afternoon of May 24, 2008, upon the occasion of the official unveiling of the bust in honor of my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923).  This is now the second national monument in his honor in the Philippines, the first being in Surigao City on Mindanao since 1927.  The above photo was taken at Borromeo Plaza in downtown Cebu City.  From left to right are seen my first cousin Socorro "Baging" Borromeo Atega, my mother Hermenegilda "Gilda" Borromeo Nonnenkamp, myself (Marc Evan Borromeo Nonnenkamp) and my grand nephew Wynn Paolo Tan Ugang.  Paolo is the grandson of Baging, having been born in 1997.

Here is a photo of my second cousin Christina "Ina" Borromeo Gaston.  She and her family reside in Bacolod on the Island of Negros in the Philippines.  She is the one holding the small child, and her husband José "Joey" Maria D. Gaston is seen on the extreme left.  They have four children named (eldest to youngest) Marianna Ines Borromeo Gaston, José Maria Canuto Borromeo Gaston, Enrique Miguel Borromeo Gaston and Sabina Ines Borromeo Gaston.  Ina's grandfather and my grandfather were brothers, my grandfather (Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes) being the eldest child among 9.  Ina's grandfather was the youngest male child, the Engineer Canuto Octavio Borromeo y Reynes (1891-1959).  Judge Andrés Borromeo, known as the famous "Fighting Judge" of Surigao and Agusan, lived from 1880 until he was felled by an assassin's bullet in 1923.

Here is yet another photograph of the December 30, 2006 Cebu City wedding of my nephew Achilles "Aichel" Bonghanoy Querouz III and his bride Charmaine Espiritu.  Aichel (born in 1975) is the second son of my first cousin Achilles "Boy Ike" Borromeo Querouz (born in 1945).  Boy Ike's mother and my mother are sisters.  Aichel is a management information systems (MIS) professional.  He and his bride Charmaine have emigrated to Australia, where he works for Accenture (the former MIS subsidiary of Arthur Andersen and Company).  They first settled in the Australian Capital Territory of Canberra, and now reside in Melbourne (in the State of Victoria, which was named after the English Queen Victoria of the House of Hanover).

This photo shows the members of my very own generation within the extended Borromeo family of Cebu City, the Philippines.  It was taken on the afternoon of May 25, 2008 on the lawn of the Borromeo beach house in Talisay, Cebu Province.  The home used to belong to my grand uncle Dr. Maximo Borromeo y Reynes (1887-1948), a prominent and talented medical doctor of his time.  The members of the Borromeo clan are seen wearing different-colored polo shirts according to family group.  Those belonging to the family of my maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923) are seen wearing yellow polo shirts.  I am seen standing second from the right in the center row.  Immediately to my left is my first cousin Vicente Francisco José Borromeo Atega, known as "Loloi."  He works for Philippine Airlines as their Cargo Manager at Mactan International Airport in Cebu.  Next to Loloi is his wife Alice Rivera Ynclino Atega, and next to Alice is my second degree cousin Ina Borromeo Gaston (wearing a dark blue polo shirt).  Seen next to Ina is my second degree cousin Mario Borromeo Capistrano, wearing a light blue polo shirt.

This photo shows the members of the eldest living generation of the extended Borromeo family of Cebu City, the Philippines.  It was taken on the afternoon of May 25, 2008 on the lawn of the Borromeo beach house in Talisay, Cebu Province.  The home used to belong to my grand uncle Dr. Maximo Borromeo y Reynes (1887-1948), a very talented and prominent medical doctor of his time.  He was the father of my Tita Carolina Mercado Borromeo Ocampo, my Tito Johnny Cairo Borromeo and my Tita Sophie Gossinitser Borromeo.  Seated in the front is my mother Hermenegilda Borromeo Nonnenkamp, and seen standing in the back (also in a yellow polo shirt of the descendants of Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes) is my father Wilfried Erich Nonnenkamp.  Seen standing on my father's right (left in the photo) is my uncle Dr. Rodolfo "Rudy" Borromeo Uy Herrera, the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Borromeo Group of Companies.  Seen on the other side of my father is my Tita Monina Herbosa Herrera, the wife of my Tito Rudy.  Seated at the table wearing a dark blue polo shirt is my Tita Marisol (Maria Soledad Borromeo Putong, a daughter of my grand uncle Engineer Canuto Octavio Borromeo y Reynes).  Next to my Tita Marisol is my Tita Emilia "Melit" Artadi La'O Borromeo (widow of my mother's first degree cousin Dr. José Cecilio "Joseling" Neri Borromeo), my Tita Carmen Borromeo Mercado (my mother's first degree cousin and a sister of my late Tito Joseling) and my Tita Milagros "Milagring" Borromeo Herrera Cañares (another first degree cousin of my mother).  I am visible in the background behind my Tito Rudy.

This photo was taken in the late afternoon of May 24, 2008 at "Plaza Borromeo" in downtown Cebu City, the Philippines, upon the unveiling of a new monument in honor of my late maternal grandfather Judge Andrés Borromeo y Reynes (1880-1923).  He was popularly known as the "Fighting Judge" of Surigao and Agusan in Mindanao, where he served as Judge of the Court of First Instance from July 1914 until his tragic assassination in January of 1923.  He became famous for the landmark Philippine Supreme Court decision of "Borromeo vs. Mariano" (1921), in which the independence of the Judicial Branch of Government was preserved against a hostile Insular Legislature.  Seen from left to right are my first degree cousin Socorro "Baging" Borromeo Atega, myself (Marc Evan Borromeo Nonnenkamp), my uncle Dr. Rodolfo "Rudy" Borromeo Uy Herrera (my mother's first degree cousin), my mother Hermenegilda Borromeo Nonnenkamp, the new monument, Vice Mayor Rama of Cebu City, my second degree cousin Maximo "Maxcy" Francisco José La'O Borromeo (General Manager of the Borromeo Group of Companies since 1987) and my aunt Tita Carmen Borromeo Mercado (a first degree cousin of my mother).
